Seasonal Fruits Guide For Delhi
A month-by-month view of what fruit actually arrives fresh in Delhi markets, and when it is worth buying in quantity.
A month-by-month view of what fruit actually arrives fresh in Delhi markets, and when it is worth buying in quantity. Everything below comes from daily experience running a produce counter at T-187, Block B, near Lal Mandir Sabji Market in West Patel Nagar, New Delhi — not from theory.
Winter: December to February
Delhi winter is the best fruit season of the year. Oranges and kinnows arrive in volume, guava is at its cheapest and crunchiest, and papaya holds well in the cool weather. This is the season to buy citrus in quantity for daily juice.
Winter fruit also stores better simply because ambient temperatures are lower. A bowl of oranges will sit happily on the counter for a week in January in a way it never would in June.
Spring: March to April
Spring is the changeover. Late citrus overlaps with the first watermelons and the earliest mangoes. Grapes are at their peak, and this is usually the best window of the year to buy them.
Early-season mangoes are tempting but often disappointing. Wait two or three weeks into the arrivals before buying in bulk; the difference in sweetness is substantial.
Summer: May to July
Summer belongs to mango and watermelon. Both are best bought little and often — mangoes because they move from ripe to over-ripe within a day or two in the heat, and watermelon because a cut fruit will not keep.
Litchi has a short window, and papaya and bananas continue steadily through the season. Storage discipline matters most in these months: nothing survives being left in a plastic bag in a warm kitchen.
Monsoon: July to September
The monsoon is the trickiest fruit season in Delhi. Humidity accelerates spoilage, and produce arriving through wet weather can carry surface moisture that turns to mould quickly. Buy smaller quantities and check items carefully.
This is a good season for bananas, papaya and pineapple, and a poor season for anything you plan to keep on the counter for more than two days.
Autumn: October to November
Autumn brings pomegranates at their best and the start of the apple season in the plains markets. Guava begins to return, and the weather turns friendly enough that fruit lasts properly at room temperature again.
It is also the festival stretch, when fruit demand rises sharply. Ordering a day ahead helps if you need a large quantity of good-looking fruit for gifting or prasad.
Buying with the calendar instead of against it
Seasonal buying is not nostalgia, it is economics. When a fruit is in season, more of it is moving through the market, so each crate is fresher and prices are lower. Out of season, the same fruit is either cold-stored or trucked long distances, and both show up in the taste.
